Winterize your beds in 5 steps

In North Texas the first freeze usually lands by mid-November. A little prep now keeps roots safe and sets up a lush spring.

1

Clean up

Cut back spent plants, pull winter weeds, and clear fallen leaves so pests don't overwinter.

2

Feed the soil

Top-dress with about an inch of compost or garden mix — it breaks down over winter for spring-ready beds.

3

Mulch deep

Lay 2–3 inches of mulch to insulate roots and lock in moisture. Keep it a few inches off stems and trunks.

4

Water before a freeze

Moist soil holds heat better than dry. Give beds and trees a deep drink a day ahead of a hard freeze.

5

Protect tender plants

Pile mulch extra-deep over sensitive roots and cover delicate plants during a hard freeze.
